In partnership with the Faculty of Architecture BUAP (Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla), ATypI will hold the second Working Seminar of 2019, on May 17 and 18. It will be open to the general public, educators, professionals and students: all will be welcome to join this exchange of ideas around the teaching and practice of typography in Mexico.
This Working Seminar be focused on the local scene, so all presentations and discussions will be in Spanish. We hope this will encourage the organization of similar events in other regions.
The main theme for the first day will be Typographic Education and Research; the discussion will revolve around the teaching of typography in universities and within individual courses, research opportunities, curriculum development and proposals to make collaborative efforts in education. The discussion on the second day will focus on the state of the art for the type industry in Mexico: jobs, business opportunities, public policies around design, strengths and weaknesses of typographers and type designers from the national community.
Travel and accommodation information
Accommodation in Puebla is affordable, and there are many options across hotel levels, as well as private rentals through AirBnB. The Faculty of architecture is a 20 minute drive from the city centre. (A taxi or Uber from this area to the University would typically cost 3-4 USD.)
Here are some suggestions for accommodation:
- Holiday Inn Puebla La Noria
- City Express Junior Puebla Angelópolis
- Hotel Colonial
- Hotel Palacio San Leonardo
The Working Seminar is free to attend, but you need to register on Eventbrite.
The programme is a single-track, two-day event and is limited to eighty participants, with a priority on seminars and workshops, rather than more formal lectures. All sessions will be recorded, and uploaded on the ATypI video channel. Documentation circulated will be posted online as well.
Here is the schedule for two days. Each section will follow a topic conducting the talks, Q&A sessions and, of course, the conversation. We will have also two short workshops on Day one limited to forty participants.
